A vintage hotel in Funchal

The Penha De Franca Mar is the part of this old hotel that is right by the sea. It is closer to the sea than any other hotel in Funchal. The hotel is charming and we would recommend it to anyone.

Location and relaxed, welcoming feel around the facilities

Hello Just an update on Quinta Da Penha de Franca. We returned the key to the safety box and paid Euro 2.50 at check out for the key . They refused to refund Euro 10.00 for the deposit that we paid. Maybe you can clear this up. Other than that, we were very happy with our stay at the hotel and can recommend it. Just maybe iron out this little blip at the end. Thank you for your efforts. Great location with great views. Comfy bed!

We had an oceanfront jr suite. We were literally looking right at the ocean! Beautiful view! the waves were a little rough so it was surprisingly loud. The breakfast was quite good. A nice variety of foods to choose. We had to leave quite early on our last morning and they brought a bag of assorted breakfast foods the night before. That was a great touch.

The large patio door did not have a properly working lock (they had a bar in the track to prevent anyone getting in, but because the door did not seal it was quite loud and there was a breeze due to the windy conditions we had. It is a little dated but clean. Sone of the breakfast staff were not the friendliest.

Charming hotel.

Within walking distance of Funchal centre and on the same street as many restaurants. Hotel retained much of it's old style and charm. Fine garden with views out to sea.

Hotel now overlooked by 2 large modern hotels. Pool to cold to use in December.It's odd that on an island that grows bananas, there were none at breakfast

Wonderful traditional Quinta

It is really lovely to be able to stay in a historic hotel so near to the city. The location is excellent and the bridge walkway is very useful. The large pool near the Ocean is very good and we enjoyed eating at Rivus. The pool staff were attentive and helpful when going into the sea to swim. The breakfast was very enjoyable.

Making it clear that you can order things like an omelette or fried eggs for breakfast from the outside kitchen would have been good. More detailed instructions on check in about the location of the larger pool would have been helpful

Perfect location only 10-15 minutes walk to the citycenter.

"Tais" the womwen in the reception was very kind and helpful. She was almost a local and private guide. Thanks a lot

Safe and comfortable hotel but better eat out

The hotel had attractive floors and staircase. I liked the books in all languages left on tables and the Christmas decorations. It felt a very safe place with mainly German guests and was quiet. The garden was charming and there was a swimming pool, I was pleased with the bottle of water for free in my room, the heating/air cooling system was easy to operate and there was a good range of channels on television/radio.

The restaurant was not very good. It felt overcrowded in the mornings with everyone blundering into everyone else yet the place was not full. Christmas Day Dinner was a great disappointment. It seemed to be just a regular menu with Italian themed food and not very good at that.

Love the pool area with access to beach

Other than umbrellas there is no structured cover. Pigeons are real problem at all outside eating areas especially the sea front. I noticed the Next and Royal Savoy have the hawk to avoid this so the Pigeons all congregate at Penha Franca ?. A polite sign asking guests not to leave food unattended would help your staff from the daily hassle of cleaning broken glass/china etc. I noticed all staff were very frustrated rather than just used/accepting the problem.

Ok for a one night stay.

Lovely old hotel, large bedroom and bathroom. Good breakfast, nice gardens and staff. Comfy large bed.

Needs updating.. we were on the 2nd floor and the lift was broken. Luckily we are fit, but not easy with luggage. The engineer was trying to mend as we left. Hairdryer ancient, swimming towels only available at other hotels pool… a long walk down the hill, when we wanted to swim in the pool in the grounds.

Good stop over

Having spent four nights at the beginning of our holiday in the ‘house’ we asked to be put in the main hotel building for this one night before leaving Madeira and we were. As on previous visit we enjoyed a lovely breakfast on the terrace.

Good

The hotel is is well located with restaurants and bars nearby and an easy walk down to the sea. It has a lovely restaurant terrace (although pigeons swoop down on the tables to grab food) and the breakfasts are very good. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is a small pool with no facilities but there is free access to the sister-hotel's much larger pool. The beds are vast!

This is an old and rather faded hotel - we were disappointed that our room 'with garden views' was in the house without a balcony and a view of outhouse rooves and hotel windows opposite. It also involve 36 steps/stairs with heavy luggage! Small things such as a kettle that had to stay on the floor because the lead wasn't long enough showed a lack of thought. The one evening meal we had there was not great, with overcooked fish and veg.

Charming hotel with friendly staff and private rooms, with a beautiful Oceanside pool.

The staff were wonderful. They were so friendly and accommodating. We were able to use the facilities (pool and parking) a few hours before our check in. The pool by the ocean was beautiful. We got to see an octopus! There are many restaurants nearby. The hotel has a lovely charm to it.

A coffee machine in the room would have been very helpful for the days we woke up early for hikes. There was instant coffee but it’s really not our taste. Our fridge did not work well (it was more like room temperature). It would be nice if the pool was open past 7pm so we could enjoy it after a day of exploring the island. We didn’t get as much use of it as we hoped due to the early closure times.

Decor was very dated, but actually charming. The air conditioning didn't really cool the room sheen, but it's an old building and had lovely big windows

Good stay in a traditional Quinta.

Very good breakfast - plenty of choice and it was a bonus being able to sit in the garden. Very good at dealing with any issues that we encountered.

Liked the fact that it was a traditional Quinta, however the bathroom was in need of renovation as there was mould around the bath and in between the tiles. The shower curtain also needed replacing. The male reception staff could also have been more friendly.
