Charming quinta

Very good breakfast. We’ve stayed here several times. Fits our interests for walks and nice quiet old culture hospitality. Friendly staff. The Brothers Restaurant has improved significantly, we thought. Many many thanks. We will come back.

First what I liked: Nice options for reading, relaxing in the sun near ocean or in the garden, and for enjoying salt water and swimming. But water in the upper pool seemed not yet warmed up. So that could be improved.

Older property well maintained

Staff very friendly and helpful and any issues dealt with promptly. Walking distance to centre.

The lift to the pool was small and slow. Uneven surfaces (which can’t be helped due to age of property) not good if you have mobility problems

A wonderful, authentic Madeiran hotel with easy access to the old town.

Beautiful traditional hotel very close to the old town and all its restaurants. A real Madeira experience that one can't get at all the characterless modern hotels. Superb facilities with two lovely pools and the ability to swim in the sea. Very friendly and helpful staff. Quiet at night - a real oasis- but within easy walking distance nightlife. A perfect place to stay.

Falls short on what should be an excellent experience'

Spacious room pleasant gardens and beautiful pool area. Pool staff so friendly and helpful.

Repetitive breakfast with cool or cold cooked food, unsmiling staff in breakfast room and failure to provide tea coffee and milk in the room is appalling service.

Just a lovely boutique style hotel, I hope they don't change it!!!

A lovely hotel, ideally situated with a peaceful atmosphere and friendly and efficient staff. A real find in a city of glitzy high rise and somewhat pretentious hotels surrounding it. Would definitely visit again.

I guess the restaurant food was a bit ordinary compared to others in the vicinity and the city, but they only seem to have a small kitchen, so do very well, Also there were no pool umbrellas at the small upper pool, which would have been nice. Oh! one day they had a loud music DJ at the lower pool, spoilt the atmosphere for us seniors anyway.

No sun unbrella's around small pool which became dirty very quickly due to adjacent trees shedding debris during windy weather. Some staff could have been a lot friendlier.

Good for an overnight stay

Breakfast area was very pleasant and food,choice and availability very good. Pool at old hotel was quiet and scenic. Loved the decor of the lounge area.

When booking would like clearer information about where rooms are e.g. in the old hotel and whether sea view is available or not. No offer of assistance with luggage up several stairs. Reception staff were a bit sombre.

Wonderful

Excellent location - great Ocean view, close to ferry to Porto Santo and center of Funchal.

The hotel did not inform us the Reception and our room were actually in another sister hotel. We climbed up a large hill with several heavy suitcases upon arrival in the middle of the night - just to find a closed reception and nobody responding to the door bell. After calling the hotel by phone we discovered we needed to go all the way back down to another address. The sister hotel is not featured on Booking.com nor elsewhere, and was not mentioned by the confirmation email. As we arrived at 1:30AM with a ferry from Porto Santo I called the hotel a few days ahead of time to confirm the reception would be open - and again nobody mentioned the new address. Also taxi to airport ordered by hotel proved to be a hotel cab and the price was much higher than standard (47 instead of 30 EUR).

Great for a one night stay

Nice pool (although not deep enough) with access to the sea. Spacious rooms with a terrace and a big bathroom. Comfy bed too. The breakfast was very generous and it had all sorts of stuff! Great for a one night stay as you can chill by the pool in the afternoon and check out quite late on the next day. Even managed to do some work in the morning as there’s a desk in the room (though the chair is not very comfortable).

The room is quite different from the pictures - I was given a room on the ground floor and the terrace was facing the pool directly, which didn’t feel very private. In the pictures, you always seem to be on some sort of elevated floor overlooking the pool and sea. I requested a large double bed on the booking but I was given twin beds. In general, it feels like some parts of the hotel are quite old and need some renovating (e.g. the carpet on the floor, the room doors, the shower in the bathroom, etc.). It’s also not clear if you’re booking a room in “Quinta da Penha da França” or “Penha da França Mar”. The former is what I expected (which feels a lot more like a boutique hotel), but I was given a room in the latter (which is a lot bigger and more impersonal).

Stay here and get the relaxation you deserve!

The room was large and the view from the balcony was gorgeous. The inclusion of breakfast and access to a second large pool overlooking the water were bonuses that I appreciated. There are fancier hotels, but many are farther away from downtown and the waterfront walking area. This accommodation provided the peacefulness and quiet but also the proximity on foot to lovely downtown Madeira.

Location excellent. Old and new hotels give good choice. Access to sea.

Customer service levels slipping from previous years. Strange procedure of giving A la carte restaurant guests lower grade seating in hotel restaurants. Weekend housekeeping have lower standards of service. Charging for room safe just pure greed and "ripping off" of customers

A paradise in a most beautiful island.

Old world charm in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea. Small but adequate pool set in fabulous gardens. Really helpful and friendly staff in all areas. A most relaxing atmosphere and a quiet retreat. Only stayed one week but will be longer next time. We are definitely returning.

We had no real issues at all. Tea making equipment was in the bedroom but have to supply or buy tea, coffee and milk. No toiletries provided except a small moisturiser.
